HOCHTIEF Construction Services
Americas Division:
Leading in Growth Markets

  • Significant profit increase in financial year 2006
  • HOCHTIEF subsidiaries with new orders and order backlog at record levels
  • Turner: high demand for "Green Buildings"
  • Sale of Aecon share continues tightening of international participations portfolio

Divisional profit up 22 percent

Profit before taxes in the Americas division was up a good 22 percent over the 2005 figure. Both the stable US and Brazilian construction sectors and successful implementation of strategies in their operations contributed to this gratifying result. The sale of our stake in the Canadian Aecon Group also had a positive impact.

Turner order backlog at record level

The strong American construction market continues to make for a high level of new orders and good utilization of resources at our US subsidiary Turner. This represents a 13.6 percent increase over 2005 results and is the strongest sales year in the company's history. For the first time, new orders as well as the total order backlog surpassed the USD 10 billion mark. An impressive number of major contracts was awarded to Turner in 2006, of which 20 had a total order volume of more than USD 100 million.

Top market position maintained

Turner continues to be recognized as a leading general builder in the US construction industry, as shown once more in Engineering News-Record's annual ranking. In 18 of the market categories that Engineering News- Record tracks, Turner ranked among the top ten. In the growth segments of healthcare, education and commercial markets Turner maintained its number one position with several major awards.

Projects Turner began in 2006 include a 32-story office tower in San Francisco, California. The approximately 46,000 square meter complex includes an open outdoor plaza and almost 400 square meters of retail space.

Turner has been the leading healthcare builder for more than 20 years. One of its projects in the healthcare field is construction of a cancer center at Yale-New Haven Hospital in

Connecticut which represents a contract volume of EUR 195 million. Turner will add 47,500 square meters to the existing building complex.

Another major project awarded to Turner in 2006 is the new Terminal 5 for the airline JetBlue at JFK International Airport in New York. The EUR 360 million project includes 26 gates, terminal access roadways and associated airfield construction. Completion is scheduled for October 2008.

Turner will also strengthen its presence in other countries. For instance, in the year under review, a joint venture was set up with EMAAR, a major property developer based in Dubai. There are plans to extend this partnership to include other Group companies.

Construction-related services expanding

In tune with the HOCHTIEF strategy, Turner is intensifying its focus on construction-related services. For facility management operations, Turner introduced a product called e.docsTM. Tailored for building owners and facility managers, e.docs captures and compiles critical building information into one easy-to-use searchable computer application.

By using virtual design and construction-ViCon (see page 46)-we can optimize the efficiency of projects as early as in the planning phase. The 4D technology, enhanced by HOCHTIEF, was successfully applied on 17 major projects in 2006. This included the Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where ViCon was used for planning technical building installations.

Since the beginning of the reporting period, Turner Surety and Insurance Brokerage carried out the brokerage for Turner's insurance portfolio. HOCHTIEF Insurance Broking and Risk Management Solutions GmbH served as a model for the expansion.
